How to Achieve Fat Loss for Good

According to the vast majority of people, real fat loss seems to be about as elusive as the Holy Grail. There are a large number of theories out there, which one is the ultimate fat loss strategy - and to make matters even worse, most of them contradict each other.

Some swear by the Cabbage soup diet. Great in theory, but unless you really view food just as fuel, you'll find that after three days the mere mentioning of the word "cabbage" will be enough to make you gag. Besides, with the cabbage soup diet you lose weight because you lose water. So, this one is not viable for the long haul and not very good to enable fat loss.

Other dieters take the "wimpy" approach and proclaim: "Everything in moderation is fine." Again, this method only works if you don't care much about food. Can you really honestly say that you can eat only ONE chocolate at a time? Half a plate of fries? Half a glass of wine?

And what exactly is moderation? Will you get up from the table while still hungry? Chances are that this technique will work wonders if you attempt to get into a really grumpy mood. It won't work if your goal is fat loss. And obviously, there are the crazy crash diets out there: Nine eggs a day, or tuna, coffee and vanilla ice cream and nothing else. One tomato and an apple anyone? Nine glasses of lemonade and nothing else? You might briefly lose a few pounds, and your mind with them.

Crash diets are a car crash for your mental health, but won't do anything for your fat loss goals. So, what else is there? What does really work? To kick start fat loss, you need to teach your body to use fat as its first choice of fuel. Your body is hardwired to prefer carbohydrates as an energy source.

So, as long as these are in plentiful supply, your body won't give your fat deposits a second glance. This means, in order to achieve real fat loss, you need to cut out the carbs. Your best bet would be one of the Atkins-style diets that are high in protein and fiber and low in carbohydrates.

There are a few out there for every taste. Atkins is of course the carnivore's first choice. You can gorge on steak to your heart's content and you don't even need to cut off the fat, because Dr. Atkins views it as a good tool to train your body to burn fat. It might get a bit boring after a few days, because you are not even allowed fruit in the first two weeks. But it works for fat loss.

The South Beach and the Dukan diet are in a similar vein, but they also suggest a low-fat approach. On the plus side, you have a wider choice of fruit. If you combine one of these low-carb diets with an exercise regime that focuses on muscle building, you should be well on your way to real fat loss.
