Four Excellent Diets for Weight Loss


If you want to lose some weight but don't know where to start, the best solution for you is to get a diet plan. The third phase is for lifelong maintenance where you can enjoy almost anything you want to eat, with the consideration of the first and second phases always in mind.

The Atkins diet is also becoming popular, and it's a well-known fad diet nowadays. It consists of four phases, and the diet is very strict about carbohydrate intake. In fact, the first phase restricts an individual to no more than 20 grams of carbs a day for two weeks. The next phases are not as restrictive, and are more focused on allowing the intake of good carbohydrates like whole wheat foods and grains. This, together with high intake of protein, fruits, and vegetables, is known to effectively eliminate fats and calories, thus promoting weight loss.

The Alternate Day Diet (ADD) is a less restrictive diet that's becoming very popular. Even Hollywood stars are using it to lose weight. The concept of this diet is that when you eat foods high in carbohydrates on one day, and the next day you barely eat any, the drop in the carbohydrate levels in the body releases the SIRT1, or the "skinny gene" which promotes weight loss. The ADD has no phases, just simply eat all you reasonably can on one day (up day) and eat less than 500 calories the next day (down day). Do this in an alternating schedule for as long as you like. Just make sure that when you eat on up days, you don't feast like you're on a death sentence. Make it reasonable and remember to stick to eating healthy stuff even on up days.

The Dukan Diet is designed similar to other diets - low carbs, high protein, and lots of fruits and veggies. The first phase restricts any form of food other than proteins from lean meats, fish, and non-fat dairy. This lasts for a week. The next phase introduces vegetables to the diet, which is eaten every other day until the target weight is achieved. When you get to your desired weight, you can now add carbohydrates in your diet but with restrictions. After you have been able to maintain the weight through this phase, you enter the last stage where you are allowed to eat any foods you like for six days, but you are obliged to keep one day of the week as an all-protein day. Whichever day is fine, as long as you do not eat anything else but proteins for that day every week for as long as you want to maintain the diet.

These four diets are very popular, and they are certainly very effective. If you've made a choice from these four diets, you can start on it immediately so you can lose weight as soon as possible.

Fragrant Tofu

Leave the vegetables out of the dish and you have a wonderful vegetarian Pure Protein dish.  But leave them in and you have an extremely wonderful Protein Vegetable dish.  This for sure is my favorite dish of 2012.  I know it’s early, but I’m going to be doing new versions of this for a while.  I’m hooked!  Get all your ingredients together and this dish takes about 10 minutes to make!

FRAGRANT TOFU

1 package (16 oz) medium-firm tofu, cut in 1/2-inch cubes
1 onion, sliced
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 t fresh ginger, minced
3 green onions, chopped
dried red chilis, to taste (these can be sliced open for more spice)

Marinade:
2 t low sodium soy sauce
1 t sake or sherry
1 T cornstarch mixed with 2 T water

Sauce:
1 t Splenda or 1 T Brown Sugar Blend Splenda
1 t cornstarch mixed with 2 t water
2 t low sodium soy sauce
1 t chili paste, or more to taste

Marinate tofu while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.  Chop all vegetables and mix all sauce ingredients together in a small bowl.  In a large skillet toast the red chilis for 1-2 minutes.  Add tofu, onion and bell pepper and stir carefully for another 3 minutes.  Add garlic, ginger and green onions and stir for another 2 minutes.  Pour in sauce and cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring carefully, until sauce has thickened.

Fad Dieting


First of all, let's make sure we're all on the same page as to what we're talking about. What is a fad diet?

I define it this way: a fad diet is one which is temporarily popular and promises weight loss (often substantial) by using methods other than a healthy balance between exercise and reduction of calories.

We've all heard about plenty of fad diets, haven't we? Remember the "Beverly Hills Diet"? "The Scarsdale Diet"? The "Cabbage Soup Diet"? "The Blood Type Diet"?

In fact, many fad diets are still around. They fade for a while, then a Hollywood star shows off a new, streamlined body and gives credit to one or another fads from the past, and off we go with that one again.

Then, there are the new or renewed ones that jump onto the bandwagon. In fact, already this year, there are diet "plans" being touted that are brand new (or at least new to the current generation) to our ears. Have you heard of:

• The HCG diet in which you take hormone injections and eat 500-700 calories per day. They promise you will lose weight. Well, duh! If you're only going to be eating 500-700 calories per day, you might just as well skip the injection (or inject fairy dust). You're going to lose weight...injection or not. And oh, how miserable you will be!

• The Paleo diet. Don't you want to eat just like the caveman? Root veggies, spices, fruits, nuts, shellfish, eggs. Oh, pass a mouse, please?

• Cleansing and detox diets are supposed to rid your body of toxins and prevent the buildup of fecal material in the intestine. (Proponents of cleanses swear Elvis had 60 pound of hardened stool in his bowel when he died. I wonder why gastroenterologists, who can stick a tube in your mouth and come out where they can tie your shoes, have never documented these wonders?)

• The Dukan diet in which you cut out whole groups of foods and then slowly add them back into your diet. (Watch this one. If it's good enough for the mother of Kate Middleton who married Prince William...it must surely be good enough for all of us, right?)

There are dozens and dozens more which we could explore, but there is no need to. There is one way, and one way only, to lose weight and that is to balance calories in with calories out.

Healthy weight loss is achieved slowly, (just as the pounds accumulated slowly). But, once you lose weight, you will keep it off because you will have changed your lifestyle insofar as eating habits are concerned.

You will be grateful when you see the quick results, and when you pass your method along to your family, they too can live a life unencumbered by excessive weight and the constant struggle to lose it!

Most adults put on two to three pounds of excess weight over the Christmas holidays. This is enough to make them feel below par and look a trifle pudgy around the waist. As a result, it's not surprising that every year one of the most popular New Year resolutions is to lose weight. This goal is rarely accomplished, largely because it's rarely thought through. It's a panic a measure which often lasts no longer than the left over turkey and mince pies. Each year people go on low-calorie diets. Today it may be the Dukan diet, in previous years the Atkins diet or Grapefruit-only diet. These crash dieting regimes have one thing in common - they don't work. Anyone can lighten their bulk by enduring a few weeks of semi-fasting, but only two per cent retain this weight loss for more than a year or two. So for a while ignore the scales and concentrate instead on gaining health rather than losing weight. Walk more. Use the stairs rather than the lifts and escalators.

Watch less television. The average American spends five hours a day glued to the idiot's lantern. Every two hours more they spend in front of the box increases their mortality rate by 13 per cent. Rather than reach for a can of coke from the fridge, get up and make yourself a cup of tea. This carries far few calories and contains small quantities of catechins which lower the amount of cholesterol absorbed in the gut. Also make a point of getting a good night's sleep, for sleep laboratories studies show that subjects who sleep less than six hours have a tendency to gain weight and develop high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes with an accompanying 48 per cent increased risk of succumbing to a fatal heart attack.

Other popular New Year resolutions are to have more fun, suffer less stress and spend more quality time with family and friends. The pursuit of these three goals will also help you lose weight and improve your fitness ratings. Researchers at a Californian university found that people who laughed for at least half-an-hour a day - by watching comedy films or TV shows - showed a rise of more than a quarter in their levels of 'good' cholesterol. This compared favourably with the rise of just three per cent shown by in those who took standard cholesterol medication without the accompanying chuckle therapy. In the same way scientists at the University of Utah have discovered that women in turbulent marriages are significantly more likely to accumulate fat deposits around their midriffs and develop high blood pressure and raised blood sugar levels. So don't worry excessively about your weight. In the New Year set out to make gains in fitness, rather than losses in weight. But don't push your luck too far. The Sumo wrestlers take part in a daily programme of strenuous strength training, but because they're grossly obese their life expectancy is little more than 60 years, which is more than ten years less than the average Japanese male..

Larb (Thai Spicy Minced Pork) In Lettuce Cups

I was thinking Thai food the other night when I made my tofu dish.  So this is what I came up with.  I had leftover ground pork and remembered getting this dish at the Thai restaurant that closed not so long ago.  Darn, that was a great place!  Anyway, the citrus, fresh herbs and spicy chili garlic paste is wonderful.  And it literally takes about 10 minutes to the table once you prepare all your ingredients.  Have a great weekend!!

LARB (THAI SPICY MINCED PORK) IN LETTUCE CUPS

1 lb ground extra lean pork
1/2 small onion, finely chopped, plus more for garnish
1 serrano chili, seeded and chopped, plus more for garnish
1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
1/4 cup mint leaves, chopped
1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
1/4-1 t red pepper flakes (depending on how spicy you like your food)
juice of 2 limes
2 green onions, chopped, plus more for garnish
2 t low sodium soy sauce
1 T fish sauce
Iceburg lettuce cups

Pour 1/4 of the lime juice over the pork and let marinate while you get the rest of your ingredients together.  Brown pork and half the chopped onion in a large skillet until cooked, about 5 minutes.  Remove from heat.  Combine the rest of the ingredients together in with the pork and pour into a large serving platter.  Serve with lettuce cups on Protein Vegetable days, with extra chopped onions and chili.

Sticking With Diets That Are Worse Than Being Overweight


What does this really mean? That we do not possess the resolve to stay with a restricted diet? That we are too lazy to get up and move? Or does it mean that something is wrong with the "weight loss" industry? Many of today's diet plans are not only ineffective, but are also detrimental to your well-being.

The Dukan Weight Loss Program:

Bacon and Sirloin Sliders

I was tempted to eat bad this weekend so I came up with something that I could eat, that satisfied the craving, but stayed in line with the diet.  I was completely happy with what I came up with.  I’ll be making them again for sure!  That’s chipotle taco sauce on there.  Remember ketchup has sugar in it, unless you can find sugarless!!

BACON AND SIRLOIN SLIDERS

1/2 pound of ground sirloin
2 slices turkey bacon, chopped
2 T fat free cheddar, grated
1 egg white
1/2 t smoked Spanish paprika
1/2 t red pepper flakes
1/2 t garlic powder
salt and pepper

Mix all ingredients with your hands, careful not to handle too much.  Season with salt and pepper.  Cook on a warm grill pan for about 5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness.  Serve with buns–I like to season my buns with whatever I’m using in the meat mixture.  This time I worked in a little bacon and cheese.

SLIDER BUNS

8 T oat bran
8 T wheat bran
2 eggs and 2 egg whites
2 T fat free cream cheese
2 T fat free cheddar, grated
2 T Greek yogurt
1/2 t minced onion
1/2 t garlic powder
1/2 t Spanish smoked paprika
1 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1/4 t pepper

Mix all the wet ingredients together in one bowl.  Mix all the dry in another.  Fold the dry into the wet until mixed.  Divide the batter into 8 muffin tins, sprayed with a bit of cooking spray.  Bake at 350 for 16-18 minutes.

Cut buns in half, lenghwise and serve sliders with taco sauce and mustard.

Makes 4 sliders, 8 buns, 4 servings of oat bran

High Protein Diet Foods


One of the biggest weight loss trends of the past few years is using a high protein diet. Some of these diets have become wildly successful with Atkins, the Dukan Diet and the Zone Diet being just a few of the more well known ones.

2. Kidney problems as the kidneys need to work to process all the protein that you're eating and this may place a big strain on them.

So, why is an increase in protein consumption recommended by so many diet plans?

The reason is that it can lead to weight loss, pure and simple. Protein may be beneficial for fat loss for a number of reasons:

1. It helps to keep you full and reduce hunger. This is why many programs recommend including protein foods in your breakfast.

2. Protein provides a short metabolic boost as the body needs to use up a lot of energy to digest it.

However, as there are risks, it is important to not overdo things. A high protein diet should not be used if it's extreme and if it prescribes an unbalance eating plan. You can consult with your doctor about any such plan before undertaking it.

IV. take three tablespoons of oat bran a day for life.

Oh, I was really craving pasta last night.  And I was trying so hard to have a PP day.  So, here it is.   A completely satisfying pasta dish, with no vegetables!  I used to love this dish, all covered with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and massive amounts of garlic, Olio e Aglio.  Well, this wasn’t full of all those calories and was just as satisfying!  Buon Appetito!!

PASTA WITH CHICKEN, GARLIC AND CHILI

4 chicken tenders
1/4 t garlic powder
3 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced

Season chicken with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Place in hot skillet sprayed with a bit of cooking spray. Brown each side of the skillet for 2 minutes and turn down the heat. Add the garlic and brown it for 1 minute. Add the noodles and give them a good spray of cooking spray. Season them with salt and red pepper flakes. Continue to cook until chicken is fully cooked and noodles are warmed through, about 3 more minutes.
