Before You Choose The Dukan Diet Or The Atkins Read This First

The Dukan diet is quickly becoming the diet to go on if you want to see fast weight loss. Followers of Dr. Dukan's regime are reporting weight loss of four to eight pounds in the first week alone. The English speaking world has only been aware the of the Dukan diet since early 2010 whereas the Atkins diet has been around for several years and is well known. Both stress the weight loss benefits of avoiding carbohydrate and increasing the amount of protein rich foods but what are the major differences between the two?

The biggest difference between the two diets is in their attitude to fat. The Atkins advises followers to eat high fat foods such as bacon whereas the Dukan diet shuns fatty foods. This avoidance makes a big difference to the users experience of the diet. This may surprise some people but low fat diets are much easier to follow and stick to than ones permitting a high fat content. Why is this so?

Given an equal quantity of each, fat contains far more calories than carbohydrate and protein. Protein contains the least calories of the three. Fatty foods are very easy to eat and in large amounts. The reason for this is simple. Fatty foods take longer to fill you up than the others. In fact, eating food with a high fat content can actually stimulate the appetite making you feel hungrier. This is why high fat food items, such as peanuts are such great appetizers. A few drinks at the bar accompanied by a handful, or three, of peanuts is a great way to get yourself in the mood for a meal in the restaurant. Unfortunately, it is also a great way to add a load of extra calories before you even sit down to eat.

Similarly, potato chips are a good snack to eat before a meal to get yourself in the mood for food. A small bowl of chips, which are basically slices of carbohydrate fried in fat and then coated in salt, will not fill you up but will give you an appetite for more food. Too much salt will make your body retain water which will cause you to look bloated and weigh more.

However, were you to eat a high protein food, such as some slices of cooked chicken prior to your meal you would soon lose your appetite and not eat so much. High protein foods take a long time to be processed by your body which causes you to feel fuller quicker and for longer.

The Dukan diet avoids food that is high in fat and also high in salt, so bacon is out and chicken is in. A consequence of this approach is not only fast weight loss but also a lack of hunger and food cravings. Many people who have been on the diet since it became known in the English speaking countries have reported their astonishment at not feeling hungry at all whilst on their diet as well as not wanting or craving fatty foods.
