How the Dukan Diet Works

The Dukan diet promises fast weight loss without calorie counting, food weighing or hunger pangs. With over five million satisfied dieters in France and the Dukan diet gaining popularity worldwide, the weight loss regime is living up to its promises. At its heart, the Dukan is a high protein, low carbohydrate, diet. Carbohydrate is initially eliminated and then slowly reintroduced over four distinct phases. Unlike the more familiar Atkins diet, this diet cuts out high levels of fat.

The Four Stages of the Dukan Diet

The first stage of the diet is known as the Attack and this consists of protein only foods. Dieters will see the fastest weight loss during this stage which lasts from two to seven days depending on the weight loss goals. There are over seventy different high protein foods to choose from so although the menu is limited it is not overly restricted.

The second stage of the diet is the Cruise. During this stage, the dieters continue to lose weight at a rapid pace and, thanks to the protein rich menu, without food cravings or hunger. Almost thirty different vegetables are added to the list of allowed foods.

The third stage of the diet, the Consolidation, is designed to help the now successful dieters keep off all the weight they've lost during the diet. As most dieters know well, the hardest thing about losing weight is not regaining all the lost pounds once the diet is over.

The final stage is the Stabilization. Dieters can now eat whatever they like as long as one day of the week is set aside for protein-only. Dr. Dukan originally suggested Thursdays, now known across the world as 'protein Thursdays'.
